BEFORE SURGERY: At the pre-operative appointment at your Doctor’s office you should know what surgery is planned, what the hoped for benefits are and what the risks are. You should ask questions and only If comfortable, sign Dr. Lackore’s consent form.  Your medications will be reviewed. You will be given Instructions.
PREGNANCY RISK WARNING: PLEASE Notify us if there is any risk of pregnancy. You must be totally celibate (avoid ALL intercourse) following menses and prior to your surgical procedure. If a woman is 6-8 days pregnant, her pregnancy test might still be negative. To avoid this issue, DO NOT HAVE SEX (Intercourse)  FOLLOWING THE PERIOD BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE.
NOTHING BY MOUTH: (Outpatient Surgery Preparation). Please do not eat anything after midnight the evening before your outpatient surgery. You may have CLEAR liquids up until 5 hours before your procedure (but NO milk and NO orange or grapefruit juice (both contain pulp). Also do NOT chew gum, suck on hard candy or smoke cigarettes during the 5 hours before surgery as these activities cause you to swallow air and fill your stomach with saliva.
IF YOU FEEL ILL:  CALL US!  If any feeling of illness comes up (cold, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, fever, or flu-like symptoms), promptly notify us. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital: Call 395-8169
ORDERS WILL BE PROVIDED (From doctor’s Office): You will be instructed where to go to have Pre-Operative testing done.
PRE-OPERATIVE TESTING:  Most will have a complete blood count and many will have a blood type and screen.  Depending on age and health history, some will require an EKG and / or Chest x-ray.  ALL women of reporductive age will be given a urine pregnancy test.
PHONE CALLS BEFORE SURGERY:  The Anesthesiologist will have a nurse phone you before surgery.  You will be asked medical questions and given information. Guidelines regarding clear liquids before surgery will be reviewed.   After reviewing your medications you may be told to take ongoing prescription medications with a sip of water on the morning of your surgery.
BATHE OR SHOWER:  with water, soap and shampoo late the evening before surgery or early the morning of surgery.  Roll-on or stick deodorant is acceptable.
PLEASE AVOID:  makeup (cosmetics), aerosol sprays, perfumes, or skin creams.
NO ALCOHOL:  Do not drink alcohol 24 hours prior to your surgery.
NO SMOKING: Avoid smoking after midnight.
HAVE A COMPANION:  You must arrange for someone to bring you home after your surgery.  A cab or bus will not be acceptable. Please arrange for someone to stay with you for the next 24 hours.
ARRIVE TWO HOURS EARLY:  You need to arrive 2 hours prior to your scheduled surgery time.

PLEASE BRING:  when you come for surgery.
Your Insurance card.
A Photo ID card (Your drivers License)
An up to date list of all your medications
Bring any inhalers with you
PLEASE REMOVE:  Any contact lenses or piercings.  Dental bridges may be removed immediately before surgery.
BE AWARE:  The hospital cannot accept responsibility for money, jewelry or valuables.
DR. LACKORE WILL MAKE SURE: (the following is available for you)
A summary of your medical condition outlining the reasons for surgery.
A detailed consent form completed and signed by you at the office.
You will be also be asked to sign a separate Facility or Hospital Consent Form.
Any lab results
Any needed medical records
Ultrasound, X-ray, CAT scan, MRI reports or pictures as deemed necessary.

AFTER SURGERY:  With your permission, Dr. Lackore will speak with your support person(s) about your surgery.
